Lets Talk About School Masters

Lets Talk About School Masters

The equestrian world often celebrates the youthful energy of both riders and their horses. However, there exists a valuable, and sometimes overlooked, treasure: the "school master." These seasoned equines may not be the ones setting speed records, but their accumulated wisdom and gentle patience offer significant benefits to riders of all experience levels.

There is no actual definitive age for a school master horse. It's more about the horse's experience and temperament than just chronological age. The key factors would include

  • Experience: School masters are horses that have years of training and competition under their belt. This could be in various disciplines like dressage, jumping, or even trail riding.

  • Temperament: They should be calm, patient, and reliable. They've likely seen it all and won't get easily spooked or overwhelmed by a less-experienced rider.

  • Health: They need to be physically sound enough to handle being ridden regularly, though their workload might be lighter than in their younger years.

Guiding Lights for Riders

Imagine a horse that embodies years of training and competition, a horse that has learned clear communication and can effectively partner with its rider. This is the soul of a school master. Their experience translates to a cool attitude and clear communication, making them ideal partners for developing riders. Beginners can gain invaluable confidence from a steady and reliable mount, while experienced riders can refine their skills with a horse that responds subtly to cues.

School masters serve as a gentle reminder that equestrian mastery is a journey of time and dedication. A well-trained experienced horse can provide a solid foundation for lifelong horsemanship. This is a lesson we learned firsthand when we paired our young teen rider with a 15-year-old Clydie X,  hunter/jumper named “Norman”. Norman's experience allowed her to focus on developing her riding technique without the challenges of a horse still under development. The confidence and skill she learned from Norman has been instrumental in her equestrian development.

Optimising Care for Experienced Horses

As with any athlete, proper nutrition is paramount to an experienced horse's continued well-being. We have established a personalised care plan for Norman that prioritises high-quality forage, supplemented with specific nutrients to ensure optimal digestion and joint health. When necessary, additional support is provided to address specific needs and maintain comfort and mobility. While this approach may appear intricate, it allows Norman to continue to participate in activities he enjoys. Even now at 18 years old, Norman remains active in hunting and the occasional show, a testament to the effectiveness of proper care for school masters.

Respectful Care for School Masters

School masters may require some adjustments to their care routine, but with proper management, they can continue to thrive for many years. Regular dental check-ups, a tailored exercise program, and a balanced diet are essential components of caring for an older horse. As Norman has aged, we have implemented extended warm-up and cool-down periods to maintain his flexibility and prevent injuries.

Timeless Partners

Charisma, a champion NZ eventer, exemplifies the talent of experienced horses. Ridden by Sir Mark Todd, Charisma achieved consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1984 and 1988, showcasing the remarkable competitiveness and longevity that experienced horses can possess.

Optimising Nutrition for Experienced Horses

Similar to humans, an older horse's dietary needs differ from those of a younger horse. A focus on high-quality forage is essential, supplemented with senior-specific feeds that address common concerns like joint health and digestion. Regular dental care is also crucial, as aging horses may develop dental issues that can impact their ability to chew effectively.

Nourishing the Golden Years

Caring for a senior horse involves a thoughtful approach to their nutrition and well-being, and a variety of specialised products can make a significant difference in maintaining their health and happiness. For instance, Poseidon Digestive EQ is a powerhouse for gut health, offering prebiotics and postbiotics that enhance digestion and nutrient uptake. Its unique formulation includes digestive enzymes and a balanced magnesium-to-calcium ratio, ensuring optimal absorption and metabolism, which is crucial for older horses that might struggle with nutrient assimilation.

CoolFibre Extra is another excellent choice, providing highly digestible fibre and a blend of soy hulls and linseed flake. This combination is rich in Omegas 3, 6, and 9, which support the immune system, joint health, and offer anti-inflammatory benefits. Its low sugar and starch content make it ideal for senior horses, promoting healthy digestion and maintaining their coat and hoof condition. The added benefits of linseed, such as antioxidants for cancer prevention and essential amino acids for muscle development, further bolster its value.

For a high-calorie forage option, Purvis Lucerne + Oil stands out. This product is not only highly palatable, stimulating appetite and promoting chewing and saliva production, but it also minimizes the risk of gastric ulcers and supports optimal fermentation in the hindgut. Its blend of quality proteins and amino acids is tailored for muscle building and weight gain, making it particularly beneficial for older horses needing to improve their topline and overall condition.

Dunstan Old Horse is specifically designed to meet the needs of senior equines, offering high-fibre, low-GI ingredients to support digestion and reduce the risk of metabolic disorders. Its elevated protein levels and inclusion of live yeast support digestion and immune function, while additional vitamins E and C cater to the unique nutritional requirements of aging horses, ensuring they remain healthy and vibrant.

Lastly, Hekeao CoolFuel Muesli is a fantastic grain-free, soy-free option that provides a natural source of cool energy high in protein and fibre. Made from Timothy hay pellets, kibbled peas, beans, lupins, and cold-pressed linseed, this muesli is perfect for senior horses needing a nutritious, filler-free diet. It supports overall health with essential vitamins and minerals, while ingredients like linseed offer additional benefits such as improved coat condition and joint support.

Each of these products plays a vital role in supporting the health and longevity of senior horses, ensuring they remain active and content throughout their golden years.

Recognising When It's Time for Well-Deserved Rest

Every horse eventually reaches a point where retirement is necessary. Signs such as decreased performance, weight loss, or persistent lameness, even with treatment, may indicate it's time to slow down. A lighter workload or a peaceful pasture allows experienced horses to live out their golden years in comfort and dignity.

More Than Age: A Legacy of Experience

School masters are much more than simply old. They embody resilience, experience, and the very essence of horsemanship. By cherishing and learning from these remarkable animals, we not only honor their legacy but also enrich the equestrian community with their timeless wisdom. As caretakers of these wise old creatures, it's our responsibility to provide them with the respect and care they deserve throughout their lives.
